The Dull Flame Of Desire

This is a poem written by 19th century Russian poet Fyodor Tyutchev. Below is its English translation:

I love your eyes, my dear

Their splendid sparkling fire

When suddenly you raise them so

To cast a swift embracing glance

Like lightning flashing in the sky

But there is a charm that is greater still

When my love's eyes are lowered

When all is fired by passion's kiss

And through the downcast lashes

I see the dull flame of desire

I love that poem. It gives me goosebumps to read it, and it's great art on its own. But Björk created this epic musical performance around it. She's so fearless and I love that about her.

This is me posing for a caricature at Disney World in '79

I remember being really pissed that I had a double chin. But check out the fashion! You've gotta love the Superman t-shirt.

My New/Old Camera.

I'm pretty excited about this. I was visiting my Mom this weekend and was blabbing on about photography and how I'm such a beginner and how much I'm starting to learn and what an amazing art form it is. I really have a strong desire to get better at this. Anyway she said she wanted to give me something and produced this lovely Minolta X-700 from 1983. The lens was of course purchased separately around the same time and I think it's the center piece of the camera's over all awesomeness. She said she hadn't used it in years and it was mine to keep. I was of course delighted and my delight soon turned in to being daunted by actually learning not only how to use an SLR camera (my first) but figuring out how to shoot on film.  So after a quick trip to Richmond Camera in Charlottesville and spending $25 on a couple of new batteries and some stuff they called "film" and I'm ready... and a little paralyzed at the same time. Wish me luck. I know it'll be a fun learning process.

In 1940 Stravinsky was arrested in Boston for re-harmonizing the Star Spangled Banner.

There was a law that had to do with the "tampering of public property". Totally ridiculous. This isn't my favorite reharm of the anthem, this is. But jeez don't arrest the guy. He meant this to be a gift to the American people. Stravinsky would later become a naturalized citizen of the U.S.
