For Apple’s Upcoming Tablet, Content Is King

For Apple’s Upcoming Tablet, Content Is King

apple-tablet-natgeo

As Brian Lam on Gizmodo today says about Apple “redefining print” for its upcoming tablet, it’s all about the content.

If Apple has learned anything from the iPod, it’s that a modern consumer electronic device is a three-legged stool: hardware, software, and media that fills it.

Apple doesn’t want to launch a tablet without media to consume on it. This is the mistake Apple made with the Apple TV: It’s a great piece of hardware and software, but the content isn’t there yet (especially the paucity of Hollywood movies).

So Steve has set out to persuade publishing houses, magazine companies and textbook publishers to make interactive books and magazines that make sense on an interactive, multitouch device. Here’s the key paragraph from Lam’s story:

“Some I’ve talked to believe the initial content will be mere translations of text to tablet form. But while the idea of print on the Tablet is enticing, it’s nothing the Kindle or any E-Ink device couldn’t do. The eventual goal is to have publishers create hybridized content that draws from audio, video and interactive graphics in books, magazines and newspapers, where paper layouts would be static. And with release dates for Microsoft’s Courier set to be quite far away and Kindle stuck with relatively static E-Ink, it appears that Apple is moving towards a pole position in distribution of this next-generation print content. First, it’ll get its feet wet with more basic repurposing of the stuff found on dead trees today.”

But what might this “hybrid content” look like?

One clue comes from Enhanced Editions, a U.K. startup founded by former-book industry executives that seeks to marry technology with traditional print publishing. “We have long-since seen the destiny of the latter bound to its embrace of the former,” the company says.

Founded in 2008 after the launch of the App Store, Enhanced Editions says the iPhone/Touch platform is a unique multimedia device, while iTunes presents an exciting distribution mechanism. So the company created an iPhone app for publishing “enhanced” ebooks. “We set ourselves the mission of making the reading software that Apple themselves would make,” the company says.

The company just published it’s first enhanced eBook, Nick Cave’s “The Death of Bunny Munro.” See the trailer for the book above.

Available as a $24.99 app (there’s also a free lite version restricted to the first three chapters), the app includes:

* The Bunny Munro ebook.
* An audiobook narrated by Nick Cave himself, synchronized to the text.
* An original ebook soundtrack, composed by Cave and Warren Ellis, that’s been specially mixed for headphone listening.
* 11 videos of Cave reading excerpts from the novel.

The app can be used to switch between audio and ebook versions, and remembers your place even if you switch formats. It has tilt to scroll, the ability to add bookmarks, or email quotes to friends. There’s also built-in news reader that receives news and extras sent to the app. The company says it has other multimedia tricks up its sleeve, but is keeping them under wraps for now.

The book is being well received, but the app is getting rave reviews. “The app itself is amazing,” says one reviewer on iTunes. “This is the new (and hard to beat) standard for book as app,” says another.

It’s not hard to imagine how such multimedia-enhanced ebooks, and likewise music CDs (Apple’s rumored “Cocktail” project) would be ideal content for a touchscreen tablet.

Next up from Enhanced Editions are Barack Obama’s Dreams From My Father and Audacity of Hope, and The Corner by David Simon and ED Burns (of HBO’s The Wire), among others.

As they said during the first dotcom boom, “content is king.”

Incredible inside and out - 2010 GeigerCars Camaro Kompressor

From 1966 to 2002 Chevrolet manufactured four generations of the Camaro. First series models that are in very good condition are prized collectors items. When the US manufacturer unveiled the concept model of a totally new Camaro at the Detroit Motor Show in 2005, the public response was so outstanding that the series production of a fifth generation of the four-seater coupé was decided and with that, the remake of an American legend. The new vehicle no longer has anything in common with the often unpopular fourth generation car. In fact, the designers have combined retro elements and modern shapes, designed an aggressive front end, a bulky rear as well as stylish sides and roof – an unmistakable homage to the muscle cars of the sixties and seventies.

In the last few days, one of the first new Camaros arrived by plane from across the Pond and rolled from the airport right into the GeigerCars.de showroom in Munich. As of now, you can not only marvel at the four-seater coupé, you can also order one there…

The Camaro LS and LT models are already fitted with a superior 308 horsepower 3.6 litre V6 engine. The modern light metal engine generates 5200 revolutions per minute, an impressive 370 newton metres. The design of the SS (SuperSport) model engaged V8 with a superior 6.2 cylinder capacity is even more notably defined. This is available in two variations which perform up to 432 HP and send a maximum torque of 569 newton metres towards the powertrain.

Radical Winter Retreat: Private Ski-In Mountain Home

Radical Winter Retreat: Private Ski-In Mountain Home

Robert Harvey Oshatz snow clam house in mt crested butte colorado 4

What do you do if you want a distinctive two-family vacation home in the mountains and you just happen to own a truckload of redwood siding? You call Robert Harvey Oshatz, Architect, of course. His creative environmentally-friendly home designs bring a stunning and truly unusual touch to the ordinary home or vacation home, no matter where its foundation sits.

Robert Harvey Oshatz snow clam house in mt crested butte colorado

This particular home was designed for the aforementioned siding-owning families. Sitting in a ski resort community in Mt. Crested Butte, Colorado, the structures is affectionately know as the “snow clam” to the locals. It sits in the perfect position for avid skiers: you can ski from the door of the house to the ski lift, take the lift up, and then ski directly back to the house.

Robert Harvey Oshatz snow clam house in mt crested butte colorado 3

Although it’s obviously a man-made object nestled in the hills and trees of Mt. Crested Butte, the house seems to harmonize with its surroundings. The shape of the exterior calls to mind large boulders or mounds of snow. The sweeping roof echoes the famous Colorado peaks. The grand redwood exterior resonates with the surroundings in a way that synthetic siding never could. Even from the outside, the home appears light and airy, yet grounded and stable despite its precarious-looking perch. Oshatz is known for his wildly imaginative designs and his belief that architectural theories and styles simply don’t hold water. He bases his designs on the balance and harmony within each project and between the project and its surroundings.

Robert Harvey Oshatz snow clam house in mt crested butte colorado 5

The interior of the snow clam is no less impressive than its exterior. The three story home boasts three fireplaces, two garages and an entire story devoted to a children’s playroom.  The gentle curves of the outside are brough into the home as well, with swooping ceilings and winding staircases. There may, in fact, be no better place to spend a ski vacation than wrapped up in front of one of the cozy stone fireplaces, watching the world go by from the multitude of windows.

Don’t Look Down: 10 Peculiarly Precarious Modern Buildings

Don’t Look Down: 10 Peculiarly Precarious Modern Buildings

By Mike in Architecture & Design, Technology, Urban Everything, Urbanism, Various

MontagePrecarious

The world’s worst skyscraper disaster is still fresh in our minds, and every year sees a new calamity in our global obsession with building storey after storey, higher and higher. You would think that all architects would be careful to  make their buildings look as stable as mountains. You’d be wrong. Thanks to modern building materials and behind-the-scenes architectural wizardry,  the new field of precarious-looking urban architecture is on the rise – as these ten vertigo-inducing examples illustrate.

1-1Precarious

(Image via: arch daily)

Capital Gate, Abu Dhabi – the most acutely leaning building in the world. It bows out 18 degrees from the vertical – in comparison, Pisa’s famous tower is only leaning at 3.99 degrees. Technologically ambitious and architecturally stunning, it looks like nothing on earth. (Well, okay, it does look like something in particular, but this is a family-friendly corner of the Web and we refuse to draw certain parallels).

1-2Precarious

(Image via: cosmoworlds)

And by the looks of the first concept drawings, Capital Gate was meant to be even more ambitious. How on earth would this design have stayed up? Judging from the reworked shape, the designers couldn’t answer that question either.

2Precarious

(Images via: luxuo)

If you live in the Danish principality of Rødovre, you may see this queasy-making structure against the skyline. This ‘Sky Village’ is made up of 60 metre square blocks built up around the building’s core. Exactly how is up to the buildiers – meaning that in theory, no two buildings would look alike. We applaud engineering flexibility, but our applause for rock-steady stability is louder. Exactly how will it stay upright, please?

3-1Precarious

(Image via: freshome)

It may look like a bad or possibly drunken attempt at Photoshopping – but the Walters Towers will soon be reality. Forming an enormous W (possibly standing for “weird”), this apartment block complex in Prague is the slightly fevered work of architects Bjarke Ingels Group, and for obvious reasons, uses the latest in load-bearing building materials.

3-2Precarious

(Image via: freshome)

Our questions are endless. Do the lifts go diagonally? Is it safe? How would it fit in with the current Prague skyline? Is it safe? Exactly how is the weight distributed? Oh, and is it safe?

4Precarious

(Images via: design boom)

How would you feel about living in a building that looks less built than balanced? This Singaporean residential complex by OMA comprises of 31 six-storey apartment buildings stacked up in a thrilling haphazard manner, with the aim of circulating fresh air around every building. Since this is Singapore, heat loss wouldn’t be a problem – but what about air-con efficiency? And that certainly isn’t a balcony-view for the squeamish.

5-1Precarious

(Images via: gayol87 and IASeNews)

Costing over $600 million and reaching 51 floors into the blue, the China Central Television Headquarters in Beijing was completed in December 2008. It is built of steel, and its two rakishly-skewed towers had to be joined in the dead of night when the metal was coolest, to prevent expansion distortion. The local nickname? “Big shorts”.

5-2Precarious

(Image via: daylife / Reuters)

In February this year, it narrowly escaped damage when the nearby Television Cultural Centre caught fire after opening ceremony fireworks went awry. This event has sparked an inquiry into the widespread use of high-explosive fireworks in China – and into the subsequent attempt by national authorities to suppress coverage of the blaze.

6Precarious

(Images via: coolboom)

Commanding what must be one of the most spectacular views in Sydney, the Holman House teeters on the brink of architectural possibilities. Although not quite as unstable as the above photos suggests, the house juts out from the cliff edge so alarmingly that we commend its current occupants for their nerve (and try to hide our jealousy at having that view). But isn’t the Sydney basin prone to earthquakes?

7-1Precarious

(Image via: dezeen)

The new Museum of Image and Sound in Rio de Janeiro is an award-winning response to the question “How unconventional can we make a museum look?” Looking like a stylishly collapsing carpark (ahem, arguably), the front-facing “vertical boulevard” hides galleries, auditoriums and even an outdoor cinema perched on top. No word on what the residents of the surrounding tower-blocks think of this last feature.

7-2Precarious

(Image via: dezeen)

Due to open in 2011, the design is meant to channel the energy of the beach promenade, providing an extension of its movement rather than an interruption. If they could turn one side of those steps into a waterslide, we think it would be made completely perfect.

8Precarious

(Images via: homedesignfind)

As well as challenging our assumptions and sensibilities, good architecture should make us feel happy. So what about this house from Ensamble Studio that seems designed to perturb, upset and make us permanently uneasy? From the swimming pool sticking out into thin air to the apparently badly-supported slab of concrete poking high above the roof, this void-riddled structure  is certainly fascinating and challenging…but is it lovable?

9-1Precarious

(Image via: skyscrapercity)

Unlike with Capital Gate, there is no attempt to subvert the shape of the two towers that make Madrid’s Puerta de Europa. These massive structures (115 metres tall) look like conventional skyscrapers – except ones that lean towards each other at a 15-degree angle.

9-2Precarious

(Image via: luciapensache)

Completed in 1996, they were the world’s first leaning high-rise buildings (so urbanites who suffer from vertigo, you now have someone to blame for the trend). They are positioned so far apart to provide the room for a subway interchange.

10-1Precarious

(Image via: arch daily)

The new housing development of Strandkanten in Tromsø, Norway, is 900 decided modernistic homes making best use of reclaimed land – and of design possibilities. The waterfront properties lean out over the water as if they long to go for a dip.

10-2Precarious

(Image via: arch daily)

After hundreds of years of straight-up window design, how do we feel about windows that themselves lean out, making it impossible for us to safely do so? And there is the potential problem with all these designs: they’re built for people, and need a warm public response to become a success. No matter how ingenious the techniques or how space-age the materials used…are we truly willing to step inside?

A collection of kisses

A kiss - a simple act that can convey a diverse array of meanings. A kiss can be intimate and private, or meant for public display, it can convey love and affection, or simply provide comfort. Its use as a greeting is under fire in our current climate of H1N1 fear, as the French government has begun encouraging citizens to forgo "la bise", their traditional cheek-to-cheek kiss, for health reasons. Gathered here are 33 recent photos of kisses expressing greetings and farewells, congratulations and joy, respect and, above all, love. (33 photos total)

I miss Juria, my wife, terribly and passionately! :( I can only kiss her on my computer's webcam for the past six months. I also miss my children and do the same thing.

The 'Collection of Kisses' series reminds me of the final scene from Guiseppe Tornatore's Cinema Paradiso, where Salvatore, the lead character, now a filmaker, views the spliced film of kisses as a final remembrance from Alfredo, his passing old theater projectionist friend. Those reading in should see the film!

I loved them all. So what!!! No male gay kiss. Geez.. people lighten up. There IS a gay kiss in the collection. Gay is gay, so they covered that minority. If they had two men, then everyone would be complaining that there was no female gay kiss.

I love the dolphin one. I have a picture of myself, just like that one. :-) One of the best days in my life, since I had always wanted to swim with the dolphins. They are such majestic creations. And that picture brought back that memory. :-)

Thx for the great collection.

Why are people always complaining. Buy your own camera equipment, shoot a series of quality pictures on a topic of your choice and then publish it lal under your own name. Amen.
I love these series of pictures and it is difficult enough to get a few good shots on a topic, to get 32 of them. Thank you is what I say.

Why on earth would totally desecrate a wonderful picture display with picture #17? Please, please, understand that my opinion is worthless and to be honest I DO NOT HATE gay people. Either Jesus exists or He does not, if He does not then there is nothing wrong with gay people marrying each other but if Jesus does exist we had better do as He says. Jude Verse 7 says: “just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which likewise indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desire, serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire.”

In my family, sons kiss their fathers. In sports men often kiss when they make the goal. Men in some countries kiss in greeting. The sad thing about not including men kissing here is that it indicates an almost pathological aversion to men showing any sort of affection to one another whatsoever. That's not only sad, it's sick.

#53: Your post desecrates these comments with your intolerance. I think Jesus would have taken all of the people into his heart, not just the ones you like. If anything, Jesus stood up for those that had no representation. Perhaps you should too.

@Pastor Keith

Jesus never said anything about marriage, sorry.

The book of Jude that you quote was not written by him -- as I recall, Jesus never wrote anything down.

For all we know he was totally fine with two ladies (or Brad Pitt's) locking lips.

Holy Crap #17... Does everything in life have to have religious overtones and implications? Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar

Posted by elkram September 17, 09 04:22 PM

Religion has no place in the law-books. Period. What one religion or group thinks is wrong is just fine by another. The last time I checked, America isn't a theocracy, but it seems to be turning into a theocrazy. This is why we have a separation of church and state!

You people who are full of hate toward gay people falling in love and wanting to recognize it like every other citizen need to keep their bigotry to yourselves.

@ mdmadph
It is funny how we twist things to try and make our point. I never said Jesus wrote anything DOWN did I? I said if Jesus is God we had better listen to him. The bible is inspired by God, Jesus is God, you do the math...The bible doesn’t say not to molest children; it doesn’t say not to sell drugs it doesn’t say a lot of things, are these things okay, or are the precepts in place. By the way the bible has a lot to say about marriage and how we are to live our lives. As for your last comment “For all we know he was totally fine with two ladies (or Brad Pitt's) locking lips.” Actually we do know that Jesus would not be fine with two ladies (or Brad Pitt's) locking lips, because He hates sin and He decides what sin is. This is not a comment on hating anyone I DO NOT HATE GAY PEOPLE.

Posted by Pastor Keith September 18, 09 10:18 AM
85.

What I find interesting is that there are people who would be offended by two gay females kissing, but if they saw two 'hot' actresses/models kissing it would be more than fine.

And @ Pastor Keith:
Your disclaimer that you "DO NOT HATE GAY PEOPLE" doesn't negate your post. Sorry.

Does anyone see a much deeper political symbolism in #26?

America, symbolized by the statue of liberty ...

kissing (endorsing?)

communism, symbolized by the deep red and arc of a sickle in the old Soviet flag.

Just a thought.

Ugh, people just STOP. Love is Love.
Get over it.
Us queers are not going away.
Learn to accept it.
For all the shit and ignorance you say about us, maybe we should start straight bashing you.

How would you like it if you were judged because you like the opposite sex?
I could walk around saying " EWW Straight people! go to hell you breeders!"
...doesn't sound too nice huh.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. But when you use your opinion to disrespect others and mentally/physically abuse them because of it, you lose that right.

Has anyone considered that the reason for no male-on-male kissing may just be that, on this occasion, the editor doesn't have a decent picture to hand? Let's not automatically assume that they "can't confront it".

Breakdown
10 Inanimate object kisses (flags, trophies, camara, glass, net, shoe, track and religious icon
6 members of the opposite sex
6 children
5 other species (cat, lion, dog, dolphin and sea lion)
3 dead relatives (coffins included here)
1 sports winner
1 relative (nephew)
1 member of the same sex

This is like a 13 year old girl's idea of what kisses are about.

# 21 kissing his shoe

# 23 kissing son who has been killed by air strike. All the agony of a father.

Not surprised no gay guys kissing... Should someone viewing these pics find gay couples kissing offensive, Its usually two guys makin out that people find more offensive so they use a girl couple instead. Could just be they didn't find a good photo either (although, I am dubious that is the case..)
